Opportunity Information: Apply for 20171206 RZ
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research Grants program supports teams of two or more scholars who are working together on substantial, sustained humanities research. The core idea is that debate, shared problem-solving, and the exchange of perspectives can produce stronger scholarship than scholars working alone, especially when a project brings multiple viewpoints to a topic and opens up new directions for inquiry. NEH is looking for collaborations that are clearly grounded in the humanities and that use humanistic methods (interpretation, historical and cultural analysis, critical argument, close reading, and related approaches), even when the team includes partners from outside the humanities.
A key requirement is that projects lead to tangible, sustainable outcomes that communicate interpretive humanities research. NEH highlights several acceptable end products: co-authored or multi-authored books, born-digital publications, themed issues of peer-reviewed journals, and content-rich open-access digital resources such as websites, databases, or research tools. Whatever the format, the outcomes must be based on humanities research and must convey that research in a way that is meaningful to scholarly audiences and/or general audiences. Dissemination is not optional; grantees are expected to share results beyond the immediate project team.
The program also explicitly encourages interdisciplinary work. Teams can cross fields within the humanities (for example, literature and history, philosophy and religious studies, art history and cultural anthropology) and can also include collaboration with the natural and social sciences. Those cross-disciplinary partnerships are welcomed as long as the project remains firmly rooted in the humanities and the central questions and methods stay humanistic rather than primarily scientific or technical.
NEH offers three award types designed to match different stages and shapes of collaborative projects. Type 1, Convening Grants, provide up to $50,000 for one year and typically fund activities like conferences, workshops, and working group meetings. These are meant to help collaborators refine a research problem, test ideas, coordinate approaches, and plan for later publication. Type 2, Publication Grants, provide up to $250,000 for projects lasting one to three years, with a cap of $100,000 per year, and are intended to carry a project through to completion of its publication goals in print and/or digital form. A notable limitation is that NEH does not support publisher-paid costs or subventions, so budgets should focus on research and production activities rather than paying publishers. Type 3, Archaeology Grants, also provide up to $250,000 for one to three years (again, no more than $100,000 per year) and support archaeology projects that culminate in publication, aligning archaeological work with the program's emphasis on humanities interpretation and public or scholarly dissemination.
Eligibility is broad and includes many organizational types and individuals: state, county, and city or township governments; special district governments; public and private institutions of higher education; federally recognized Native American tribal governments; and nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status (other than higher education institutions). Individuals may also apply, which can be important for scholar-led collaborations that are not housed in a single institution. The opportunity is a discretionary grant under CFDA 45.161, with an award ceiling of $250,000. The listing provided reflects an original closing date of December 6, 2017 (Funding Opportunity Number 20171206 RZ), which is useful for reference but may not reflect current deadlines if the program has been reissued in later cycles.Apply for 20171206 RZ
